The Australian Severe Weather Association would like to apologise to its members and potential members for not updating its website for quite some time.

While the website has not been updated, rest assured that there is work going on behind the scenes.

We here at ASWA realise that the website may not be all that user friendly, so we have started to build another website with the key focus being on navigation which is an important aspect of any website.

We would like to ask for your patience as we build this website, it may take some time but we hope to get it running as soon as possible.

Southern Skies Launch

The Australian Severe Weather Association is proud to announce the launch of its new Weather Magazine - Southern Skies.

This new magazine will take the place of Storm News, and will be released on a quarterly basis.

The Spring 2008 edition has been released, and is available to members for downloading and reading from the members area.

The drought has come to a sudden end in a number of places in Eastern Australia with heavy rain and major flooding. Storms were a little less frequent than in early December, but nonetheless there have been some amazing reports produced:

Conditions in Eastern Australia in the period 5th - 12th December were more conducive to producing severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and hail due to the stronger stearing winds and increased shear.

Tamworth, NSW: 7th December

A storm on the Northern fringes of Tamworth, NSW on the afternoon of 7th December produced damaging winds that caused major damage to a number of buildings in Oxley Vale and Moore Creek. The snapping of a concrete high voltage power pole at the base along with other damage to electricity infrastructure resulted in extensive power outages in the areas North of Tamworth, including the towns of Manilla and Barraba:

North-West/Northern Sydney, NSW: 9th December

A storm producing hail to 8cm moved across North-West and Northern Sydney on the afternoon of the 9th December causing extensive damage to homes and cars with an estimated repair bill in excess of $100 million.

The past few weeks have produced an amazing number of storms. With a series of troughs well entrenched in NSW and the La Nina event providing the moisture that been missing in previous years its shaping to be one of the best storms season in Eastern NSW for quite some years. Oh and of course the Top End has fired up as well.

Is the Collector Supercell the most photographed storm in Australia ever? Apparently there where 17 people surrounding the beast, some reports with more to come I'm sure:

Jimmy Degaura of www.australiasevereweather.com has captured what must be some of the most extraordinary footage (13mb file) of a tornado on the ground in Australia at Dunoon near Lismore on 26th October. An initial assessment by Jimmy and Michael Bath rate it as an F-1 tornado:

With the weather warming up severe weather reports are appearing from many places across the country, well OK the Northern Rivers and SE Queensland mostly, but we have had some storms in Sydney.
